Silk pillows, hats and hair bands are reportedly the best companion for hair and skin judging by the information that surrounds us.
Silk helps your skin stay young longer and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and pimples, while allowing your hair to be less tangled and not burst tied into sweet silk scruncy rubber bands.
But is silk really that special or is it just another trick that leads us to open our wallets with the goal of preserving beauty?
When we threw ourselves into researching the topic we were interested, as always, in what experts say about silk, sleeping on silk, how it affects our hair and skin, and whether it really makes a difference.
Does silk help our skin and hair?
In short, experts say- YES!
After the Good Housekeeping editors tested the best silk pillows they found on the market in their Good Housekeeping Institute Textile lab, most of them immediately bought the product and continued to sleep on this gentle miracle, swearing it improved their hair and skin appearance.
But is silk the solution to all your beauty ailments. Good Housekeeping spoke with Dr. Neal Schultz, a dermatologist from New York, and asked him what is really realistic to expect from silk pillows and what is just a dream…
Can sleeping on silk prevent wrinkles?
Believe it or not Dr. Neal Schultz says he can! “Smooth surface with very little friction” means less skin pulling than with a traditional cotton pillow, says Schultz. “Sleeping on the side / face causes ‘crushed wrinkles’, so we may get less of them when we sleep on silk.” Studies show that friction from throwing and turning causes wrinkles on the skin, but a silky smooth surface can reduce that effect in the long run.
Can a silk pillowcase / cap reduce hair frizz?
That! Thanks to the super smooth silk texture, the hair simply slides over it without any friction, which means you will have less chance of waking up with tangled hair full of frizz, while cotton ‘catches’ your hair overnight and pushes it into the nest (knots).
Do silk pillows keep your skin hydrated?
Thanks to that super smooth texture, this is actually true. The smoothness of silk “means it is less able to absorb moisture from the skin,” says Schultz, keeping the skin beautiful and hydrated without absorbing moisture from the skin. This is why silk pillows are great for those who have dry skin (or for use in the dry winter months).
Do silk pillows keep your hair healthy?
Yes, in a way: They help maintain hair hydration, and Schultz says silk can help with brittle hair. Cotton is more porous than silk, so traditional pillows absorb moisture from your hair, while silk leaves that hydration where it belongs: in your hair. This means if you have a problem with dry hair or dandruff, a silk pillow will help with that as well.
Can silk pillows regulate temperature?
Silk may not be the best cooling option in the summer, but it definitely regulates temperature. According to Lexie Sachs, assistant director of the Good Housekeeping Textile Laboratory, silk fibers themselves regulate temperature. Unlike moisture-absorbing cotton, silk wicks away moisture to keep you dry and cool all night.
Do silk pillows prevent acne?
Not necessarily. It is true that silk does not absorb as much moisture as cotton, but you should not expect it to clear acne or prevent an outbreak. Instead, if you suffer from acne breakouts or adult acne, it is better to adopt a skin care regimen to combat acne (and stop touching your face!).
Are silk pillows naturally hypoallergenic?
If your allergies aren’t directly related to your bedding, don’t bet on it. Claims that silk is naturally hypoallergenic “are not relevant to most people,” says Schultz.
Do the amino acids in silk pillows improve our skin?
Not. Schultz explains that although silk contains amino acids and natural proteins (and that amino acids are excellent for skin care), they cannot be transferred to the skin.
Can silk pillowcases prevent the tops from cracking?
A perfectly smooth silk texture will prevent tangles of hair and frizz, but it can’t completely prevent breakage and damage to the hair. Instead, use a deep conditioner and trim the tops regularly.
Are silk pillows an anti-aging product?
In some way. Silk pillows can reduce wrinkles and improve the appearance of the skin, which can make you look younger. But if your goal is anti-aging, remember that fine lines and wrinkles make up only 5% of your face, says Shultz.
Is it worth investing in a silk pillow or hat?
They would say that: Silk pillows can improve the hydration of the skin and hair, prevent small wrinkles and smooth your hair. Just don’t expect magical results and too many miracles.
“One should be wary of unrealistic claims,” Sachs says. “While silk pillows are great for preventing wrinkles on your face, they won’t nourish your skin with the nutrients it needs, won’t completely prevent flaking, or prevent acne from breaking out.”
